Postcard illustration for online Japanese stationery store bungu

For bungu store’s November postcard edition, I created an illustration based on the style of Japanese graphic artist and fashion designer Junichi Nakahara (1913–1983). He became famous as an illustrator during the 1920s–30s for his work in the girls magazine Shojo no Tomo. He’s known for his bijinga (beautiful women) illustrations and for developing the style of character eyes in shojo manga.

Illustration for Tokyo Weekender Magazine: Japanese Women Writers

I wrote and illustrated an article for Tokyo Weekender magazine on 20th-century Japanese women writers, whose pioneering writing and activism challenged social norms and still speak volumes today.

From left to right, top to bottom: Yuriko Miyamoto (1899–1951), Akiko Yosano (1878–1942), Sawako Ariyoshi (1931–1984), Nobuko Yoshiya (1896–1973), and Raicho Hiratsuka (1886–1971).

Cover for Haiku Poetry Zine: The Land of Po

Illustration for the zine I designed that compiles a selection of my great-grandma’s haiku poems.

Born in Japan, my great-grandma, Yasue, migrated to Brazil late in life, where she spent her remaining years until her passing. She expressed her profoundly curious and insightful observations of the strange new land she found herself in the form of haiku.
